Perfect Looks for Sikh Weddings and Punjabi Celebrations
Wedding season is here, and if you're looking to turn heads at every Punjabi celebration, you're in the right place. Whether you're attending an Anand Karaj ceremony at a Gurdwara or dancing the night away at a lively sangeet, your outfit should reflect the vibrant culture and deep traditions of the Punjabi and Sikh communities.
In this blog, we break down the most stylish, traditional, and trendy Punjabi outfits to wear during the wedding season. Let’s dive in!
1. The Classic Salwar Kameez – Timeless Punjabi Elegance
The salwar kameez is a staple in every Punjabi wardrobe. This suit is essentially a long tunic style top with loose fitting bottoms. There are many different styles of top and bottom which can be created. This makes "Salwar Kameez" the umbrella term within Punjabi and Indian Culture. For wedding functions, go for heavily embroidered versions with zari, zardozi, or mirror work. Bright jewel tones like maroon, emerald, and royal blue are perfect for the occasion.

Styling Tips:
Pair with a phulkari dupatta for a traditional Punjabi touch.
Opt for juttis with embroidery or beads.
Add traditional jhumkas and a sleek bun or braid.
2. Patiala Suits – The Quintessential Punjabi Look
If there's one outfit that screams Punjabi pride, it’s the Patiala suit. A well known traditional style of Salwar Kameez, known for its voluminous pleated bottoms and short kameez, this outfit is fun, youthful, and perfect for mehndi or dholki nights.
Best For:
Pre-wedding events like sangeet, mehndi, or haldi ceremonies.
Pro Tip:
Choose vibrant colors like yellow, fuchsia, or parrot green, and pair with a contrasting dupatta.
3. Sharara & Gharara Sets – For the Trend-Setting Guest
Modern Punjabi outfits have taken cues from Mughal fashion, and sharara or gharara sets are now popular at Sikh weddings too. With flared bottoms and cropped or peplum-style tops, this look is perfect for women who want to blend tradition with trend.

Fabric Choices:
Velvet or georgette for winter weddings.
Silk or chiffon for a flowy summer look.
Best For:
All occasions like sangeet, mehndi, or haldi ceremonies. Popular choice for matching Bridesmaids/ Family outfits
Pro Tip:
Choose flowy fabrics with heavy embroidery or bold designs on the bottoms to get the most out of the flare.
4. Lehengas – Bridal and Beyond
While brides often choose heavily embellished Punjabi lehengas, guests can also wear lighter versions with floral motifs or gota patti work.
A lehenga consists of the following:
Blouse - Normally a short blouse that will come up to the waist
Lehenga Skirt - A long skirt that goes from the waist down to the ankles, flowing in an "A" Shape.
Dupatta - A long dupatta

For Sikh Brides:
A traditional Punjabi bridal lehenga usually comes in red, maroon, or pink with matching chooda and kaleere. If this is worn in the Gurdwara during the Anand Karaj, the Lehenga will often be modest, covering the stomach.
Don't forget the embroidered dupatta to cover your head respectfully during the Anand Karaj.
For Wedding Guests:
If wearing to the Gurdwara during the Anand Karaj, we recommend finding a lehenga that will have the stomach covered. If you are wearing this to attend the Reception then any style will work. Colours of celebration are Pinks, Oranges and Blues. Of course, speak with the Bride and Groom's family on recommendations, in regards to colour and modesty.
Don't forget the embroidered dupatta to cover your head respectfully during the Anand Karaj.
5. Kurta Pajamas & Nehru Jackets – Punjabi Style for Men
These days, both in Punjab and in the UK, most men, sometimes including the groom will opt in for a modern wedding suit, being a simple suit and tie.

However it is customary to choose a Kurta Pajama for pre-wedding events. A Kurta Pajama is a long tunic top with narrow trousers. The style of the bottoms can change depending on the family heritage. Often the Kurta Pajama will be accessorised with a Shawl for the Jaago and other pre-wedding events.
A Nehru jacket is a embroidered or printed waistcoat that the men will wear on top of a plain coloured Kurta Pajama. Close family members of the Bride and Groom will usually be seen wearing Nehru Jackets matching the bridesmaids.
Men can channel Punjabi flair with well-fitted kurta pajamas, paired with embroidered Nehru jackets or turbans in festive colors.
Wedding Essentials for Sikh Men:
Safa or turban tied in wedding hues.
Khussa or mojaris with a touch of embroidery.
For the groom: a Punjabi sherwani with a sword (kirpan).
6. Accessorize Like a Punjabi
No Punjabi outfit is complete without accessories:
For Women: Maang tikka, passa, bangles, Punjabi juttis, and potli bags.
For Men: Brooches, pocket squares, and statement watches.
Final Thoughts
Punjabi weddings are a celebration of colour, culture, and community. Dressing in the right Punjabi outfit not only shows respect for the traditions of the Sikh faith but also allows you to enjoy the festive season in true desi style.
